Special Envoy of Myanmar State Administration Council Chairman Praises Cambodia’s Rapid Development

Visiting H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing, Union Minister for the Ministry of the State Administration Council Chairman’s Office of Myanmar has lauded the rapid development of Cambodia.
In a courtesy call on Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet at the Peace Palace here this morning, H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing highly valued the good relationship between Myanmar and Cambodia, and believed that under the leadership of Samdech Thipadei, the cooperation and relations between both countries will be further strengthened and expanded.
The special envoy of Myanmar State Administration Council Chairman also briefed the Cambodian Premier on the recent developments in his country.
For his part, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed warm welcome to the visit of H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing to Cambodia, and emphasised that there are still more potential for the two countries to foster their bilateral cooperation.
Some potential areas for cooperation between the two countries mentioned on the occasion include economics, trade, culture, tourism and people-to-people connectivity.
Besides, the Cambodian Prime Minister hoped that the problem in Myanmar will be resolved in the near future.
Earlier on the same day, H.E. U Ko Ko Hlaing also paid a courtesy visit to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment for peace in Myanmar, stressing that Cambodia has no strategic, political or economic gain in this effort, her only intention is not to see the people of Myanmar suffer from a tragedy due to prolonged war because Cambodia has already gone through it.

Thailand and China Strengthen Trade Relations at Key Meeting

Deputy Commerce Minister Suchart Chomklin led a Thai delegation to the 3rd “Thai-China Sub-Committee” meeting in Bangkok, seeking to enhance trade ties between Thailand and China. The focus of the discussions, co-chaired with China's Deputy Commerce Minister Li Fei, was on increasing market access for Thai agricultural products, especially livestock and fruits, and improving the logistics for transporting Thai goods to China.
The meeting also addressed the promotion of intellectual property rights and joint trade exhibitions. Suchart, representing Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, invited Chinese investors to explore investment opportunities in Thailand's key sectors, such as the electric vehicle industry and e-commerce.
Discussions also stressed the strategic importance of fully utilizing existing free trade agreements, such as the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), to bolster economic exchanges. The initiative is considered vital as China has been Thailand’s largest trading partner for over a decade, with bilateral trade in 2023 nearing 105 billion US dollars, despite a slight year-on-year decrease.
The first five months of 2024 saw a 4.24% increase in trade between Thailand and China, indicating a robust economic relationship. Thailand’s major exports to China include fresh fruits and rubber products, while its imports are dominated by electrical machinery and chemicals.
Cambodia’s Exports Jump 12 Percent in First Half

Cambodia exported a total of US$12,293 million worth of goods in the first half of this year, up 12.6 percent from US$12,181 million recorded in the same period last year, showed the data from the General Department of Customs and Excise on Wednesday.
At the same time, the Kingdom’s imports rose by 12.8 percent to US$13,796 million, read the report.
According to the source, bilateral trade between Cambodia and its trade partners was amounted to US$26,092 million during the January-June period, a 12.7 percent year-on-year increase.
The U.S. was the biggest market for Cambodia’s exports with a total of US$4,401 million, followed by Vietnam and China with US$2,027 million and US$814 million, respectively.
H.E. Penn Sovicheat, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce, said that the Cambodia-China Free Trade Agreement and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) added momentum to the country’s export growth.
“Despite war crisis and weak purchasing power, Cambodian orders remained high, with the volume of orders remaining unchanged, although there was a decline in some items, there is an increase on other items,” he said.
Cambodia’s main export products are garments, machinery, electrical equipment, footwear products, leather goods, grain, furniture, rubber, fruits, vegetables, pearls, toys and textiles.
The garment, footwear and travel goods industry is the largest foreign exchange earner for the Kingdom.
Cambodia’s major imports include medicines and supplements, consumables and food and beverages.
